Sisu Counselling, Consulting, & Clinical Supervision

Dr. Stephanie Baker, PhD, RSW, SEP

There are moments in life where each of us struggles to understand and cope with experiences we face. Sometimes, having additional support can assist with exploring and locating the strengths and resources you already possess so that change can turn into positive and rewarding growth. Our space is one in which compassion, respect, and inclusivity are honoured. These values guide us in supporting you to create and live a life that is meaningful and whole.

Sisu is a unique Finnish term that describes a special strength and extraordinary determination in moments of adversity.  It entails a combination of perseverance, resilience, and resoluteness that enables individuals to maintain a courageous approach towards challenges.

We believe that every person who makes the decision to seek support embodies Sisu; it takes tremendous bravery and tenacity to explore life's challenges in a deeply transformative manner.

Stephanie is a Registered Social Worker (RSW) with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, and a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP).  She has been practising in the field for over 25 years and is trained in a number of therapeutic modalities. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Brock University, as well as a Master of Social Work and PhD (Social Work) from Wilfrid Laurier University.

Throughout the course of her practice, trauma has been a consistent thread woven throughout the experiences of those she has served. Stephanie has been privileged to support people in a number of areas including acquired brain injury, addictions, intimate partner violence, mental health, concurrent disorders, and sexual violence, as well as provide individual, marital, family, and group therapy to a diverse range of ages and needs in both community and institutional settings.

As a result of her personal and professional experiences, Stephanie believes that adversity is a call to growth and that everyone has the requisite resources/skills to achieve their goals. Given that most difficulties people experience are relational in nature, she firmly believes in the transformative power of a safe and supportive relationship. Engaging in a collaborative, compassionate, and respectful relationship fosters hope, as well as creates the conditions required for individuals to move towards wholeness.

Stephanie’s expertise and interest lies in supporting people with navigating the outcomes of various forms of trauma, neurodivergence, addiction, violence, and mental health concerns, including the ways in which these issues often intersect.
